Childhood Asthma
by Robert Grazian
Asthma is a chest illness that causes difficulty in breathing. A person gets an asthma attack when the lungs do not get sufficient air. Things that trigger asthma attack at home are dust mites, passive smoking, mold, cockroaches, an unclean carpet, stuffed toys and the fur of cats and dogs. Other reasons could be air pollution, certain food and respiratory tract infections and vigorous exercise. The inability to breathe effortlessly and provide oxygen to the lungs makes it a fatal disease.
Complete cure of asthma is not possible, but necessary precautions taken by the child and the parent will ensure that the child is remains hale and hearty.
Talk to your doctor regarding your apprehensions about asthma attack. Talking to the doctor will help you to identify the asthma triggers within your house and ways of getting rid of them. Note down the medications that the child needs to take in case of an attack.
A vigorous and well-managed plan followed on a day to day basis at home will help you to keep your child's asthma in control.
Smoke given out by power plants, factories or fire, dust, crackers and fumes given out by cars triggers asthma. Asthma attacks could occur immediately or the next day too. To evade outdoor pollution avoid going outdoors when the pollution level is at its peak. One could also postpone or reschedule their activity if the level of pollution has increased outdoors.
If your child is wheezing while inhaling, gets tired easily while playing, takes short breathe, has a disturbed sleeping pattern, persistently coughing, complains of pain in the chest, then this could be early signs of asthma.
Allergy and asthma are interconnected. If your child is prone to allergies, chances of asthma in such children are high. Allergic asthma is the most common among children. If untreated allergic asthma could be life-threatening.
Childhood asthma could result in poor attendance in school. Childhood asthma also results in poor performance academically and low self-esteem.
It is very difficult to predict who can develop asthma. Children will low immunity level stand a high chance of developing it. Parents must see to it that asthma does not burden childhood. Treat your child normally and let the child express his feeling and apprehensions freely. A good rapport will go a long way in keeping the illness in control. Dealing with childhood asthma could be very challenging for the parents. Children do not understand much at this age and so taking the necessary precaution and giving proper medication becomes an uphill task.
